Colts Pre-Season Enters Phase 3
As we move into autumn, Southern Districts have entered Phase 3 of their pre-season training program. Having commenced in late October 2024, the squad has undertaken close to 100 sessions focusing on fitness, skills, gym work, and rugby IQ. The dedication has led to significant physical transformations, proving that hard work pays off.
Last Saturday, the team pushed through a demanding mini-camp in tough, hot conditions. The players’ fitness levels are undeniable, and their resilience was on full display. A special highlight of the day was Ian Bond’s ‘College of Knowledge’ life experience session, which was met with full commitment from the squad. Ian’s sessions, which he has conducted for several years, continue to reinforce the core values of teamwork, commitment, communication, discipline, and respect. Thank you, Ian, for your invaluable contribution to the Colts program.
A big thank you also to Matt Barr for assisting Jake with planning and logistics, ensuring everything ran smoothly, including organising lunch for 50 hungry players and staff and a massive Rebel Yell thank you to Simon Bennett who very kindly paid for the lunch and did so much behind the scenes work to ensure the day was such a success!
Colts Shine at Warringah 7s
Recently, our Colts squad entered a team in the prestigious Warringah 7s tournament, led by none other than Brackin Henry. Having an ex-Australian 7s player as coach was a massive advantage, and Brackin was thoroughly impressed with the team's performance. The boys tied for 2nd in their group and made it to the semi-finals, where they displayed remarkable resilience.
Despite conceding early points in multiple games, they fought back each time, showcasing a never-give-up attitude essential for the upcoming season.
Brackin strongly believes that several players have the potential to excel in 7s rugby, and moving forward for 2026 ,hopefully the club enters in additional two or three tournaments. Participating in 7s competition is a great way to enhance fitness, breakdown accuracy, one-on-one tackling, mental strength, and, most importantly, enjoyment of the game.
Upcoming Trial Matches – Support Your Team!
With March upon us, we transition into the trial match phase of the pre-season. Training will now focus on match skills, game scenarios, and plenty of set-piece work. The club has lined up three fantastic trial games:
15th March vs. Easts at Woollahra
22nd March vs. Gordon at Rockdale
29th March vs. Two Blues at Forshaw Rugby Park
We encourage all supporters to come down, especially for the match at Forshaw, and get behind the Colts. You won’t be disappointed!
Acknowledgements & Looking Ahead
A massive shout-out to Jake Holman and his coaching team, as well as Angie and the Strength & Conditioning staff, for their extraordinary effort in preparing the squad. Having been involved in Colts since 1996, I must say I am highly impressed with this group of players. Their progress is a testament to the past three to four years of growth in the Colts program.
A special mention to Joe Barakat and his team for their foresight in establishing the Rebels Rugby Foundation. This initiative will be a game-changer in developing our Rugby Pathway and enhancing our existing programs. Any contributions to this cause would be greatly appreciated.
Finally, we still have vacancies for managers, and we welcome any new players looking to get involved. If you're keen to have a run, now’s the time!
See you at Forshaw, and if you're up for a rugby chat, I’m always happy to talk Colts rugby!
